Welcome to our blog! To us, ‘Nachhaltability’ means working together on a cross-cultural project to investigate how we can live more sustainable lives. The aim of this project is to share our ideas and thoughts with each other about how we can become more sustainable in our lifestyle choices and to become more aware of how our own habits affect the world around us. Over the course of this project we will all be looking into three key areas of sustainability; food, fashion, and waste. Sharing culture is without doubt one of the most important aspects of learning a language and is something we will emphasise heavily in the work we do together as we seek to learn more about life in the UK and Germany. We are looking forward to making strong connections between our four schools and encouraging friendship between all students.
Colchester: Julia Fischer
Ich habe Englisch und katholische Religion auf Lehramt an der Technischen Universität Dortmund studiert und arbeite momentan an einer secondary school als deutsche Fremdsprachenassistentin in Colchester. Während meines Studiums habe ich bereits in New York und Philadelphia gelebt, doch die Liebe zur britischen Kultur zieht mich immer wieder ins Vereinte Königreich. Neben Colchester habe ich schon längere Aufenthalte in Oxford und Fleet verbracht. Deshalb ist es mir eine besondere Freude den Schülerinnen und Schülern, durch dieses Projekt, nicht nur das Thema „Nachhaltigkeit“ näher zu bringen, sondern auch einen Austausch zwischen meinen Lieblingskulturen zu fördern.
Hamburg: Victoria Baines
I studied Liberal Arts with a Major in Comparative Literature and a Minor in German at King’s College London. During my degree, I had the opportunity to study abroad in Shanghai and in California, from which I have definitely picked up a habit of moving to other countries more frequently than my family would maybe like. Having mainly studied medieval German literature, I wanted to use this year to practice my German in a more contemporary context. I am working as a Language Assistant at BS02 in Hamburg – I feel really lucky to have been placed in this city and have chance to learn about education in Berufsschulen, something quite different from my own educational background. In my free time, I love exploring the different neighbourhoods, volunteering with a nature conservation charity and challenging myself in yoga classes auf Deutsch.
Köthen: Imogen Burgoyne
I graduated from the University of Birmingham with a Modern Languages degree in French, German & Russian. During my studies I was lucky enough to spend time living and studying in St Petersburg, Moscow, Vienna and Tours. I am currently working as an English Language Assistant at the Freie Schule Anhalt in Köthen, Sachsen-Anhalt. I am hugely appreciative of the warm welcome I received when I moved to Köthen, and have spent the past few months getting involved in town life. I have loved getting to know all of the students at the my school, as well as having the chance to travel around the region. My great passions are foreign language education, history, as well as of course travel and culture. Some of my favourite life experiences so far have been learning to waltz in Vienna, watching the ballet in the Kremlin Palace, and climbing the Great Wall of China.
I am excited to be working together with the wonderful team on this project to help our students learn more about the fascinating cultures of Germany and the UK and to investigate how we can work towards living more sustainable lives. I also hope that you all enjoy writing for the blog and reading all of the posts and comments from each school, and, most importantly, have fun and enjoy being part of this fantastic project too!
Sutton: Pia Hofer
Ich freue mich sehr auf diesen ersten Blog-Eintrag von „Sustainability Surrounding Me“ und auf alles, was uns die kommenden Monate erwarten wird. Der Blog ist für Euch Schüler um Eure Meinungen auszutauschen, zu kommentieren und spannendes zu Nachhaltigkeit über das jeweils andere Land und die anderen Schulen zu erfahren. Als Deutsche Fremdsprachenassistentin in Sutton (Surrey) erlebe ich diesen Austausch gerade hautnah mit und hoffe natürlich, dass auch Ihr die ein oder andere Erkenntnis haben werdet oder euch ein klein wenig besser mit den Kulturen der Länder auskennen werdet.
Ich genieße gerade jede Minute meiner Assistenzzeit in der UK und kann Euch sagen, es gibt einiges über England zu staunen, schmunzeln und zu lernen. Und von meinen Schülern höre ich natürlich im Gegenzug dasselbe über Deutschland, wenn ich mal von meinem Alltag in Deutschland berichte. Mein Alltag hier ist gerade ziemlich aufregend. Ich unterrichte an drei Schulen die Sixth Former, also die Oberstufe (wobei Schüler*innen hier in der Oberstufe mit 17 oder 18 ihre A-levels absolvieren). Das kann manchmal ganz schön viel sein und doch ist es toll zu erleben, wie sich die Schulen alleine in einer Stadt unterscheiden können. Sutton Grammar School ist eine Jungs-Schule, in der Mädchen in der Oberstufe zugelassen sind und Sutton High School ist eine private Mädchenschule. Durch den Musiklehrer an der Sutton High kann ich meine Liebe zu Singen weiterführen und bin mit ihm zusammen in einem Chor in London. Auch Sutton Grammar hat ein breites Freizeitangebot für Lehrer, die bei sportlichen Aktivitäten, wie Spinning oder Badminton, dabei sein möchten. In Deutschland habe ich bei weitem nicht so viel Sport aber dafür mehr Musik gemacht, da könnt ihr jetzt entscheiden, was für Euch mehr Priorität hätte.
Nach meiner Zeit in England werde ich zurück in meine Heimat Bayern gehen und dort an der LMU München meinen Master beenden. Und dann kann ich endlich als Lehrerin für Wirtschaft und Englisch an eine berufliche Schule (FOS/BOS/Berufsschule) in das Referendariat gehen und meine Lehrer-Ausbildung beenden.

The UK-German Cultural Exchange Ambassadors are a network of language assistants in the UK and Germany. The network enhances the impact of the work of English Language Assistants in schools in Germany through short-term project partnerships with German Modern Language Assistants in the UK. The programme aims to strengthen UK-German school and youth links and enhance their visibility through projects in school which help pupils gain linguistic and cultural understanding.
